SUMMARY:Continuous Insulation: Code Requirements, Benefits, and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Continuous Insulation: Code Requirements, Benefits, and Challenges\nDATE\nThursday, January 26, 2023\n1:00 PM – 2:30 PM ET\nEducational Credits: This course has been approved for 1.5 IIBEC Continuing Education Hours. This course has been approved for 1.5 AIA LU HSW\nPrice\nMember: $65\nNonmember: $105\nDescription \nContinuous insulation is critical in achieving healthy, energy-efficient, and durable buildings. However, many construction installation challenges exist that prevent continuous insulation from matching its intended performance. This presentation will review what continuous insulation is, why it’s important, and how to achieve it in the field. It will discuss and review codes and standards that require continuous insulation. This presentation is meant to bridge the gap between the important concept of continuous insulation and strategies for achieving it by practical means in the field.\nThe intended audience is architects, building owners, contractors, and anyone with a stake in high-performance buildings.\nObjectives\n1. Explain the basic modes of heat transfer in building assemblies.\n2. Summarize how continuous insulation helps achieve energy-efficient, durable, and comfortable buildings.\n3. Identify and discuss which codes and standards require continuous insulation.\n4. Evaluate solutions to common design and construction challenges in achieving continuous insulation.\nCitations\nIBEC and IECC 2021, 2018, 2015, 2012, 2009\nPhius CORE\nNPFA 285\nDOE Building Energy Codes Program\nSpeakers\nKeith Simon, FAIA\nKeith Simon is an expert in building enclosure technology and addresses the critical and often unmet need for ensuring and improving building performance, resilience, and durability by guiding design teams, educating future architects, and facilitating interdisciplinary exchange. Simon joined Building Exterior Solutions LLC. (a division of Terracon) in 2014. He is a Certified Passive House Consultant, Legacy LEED AP, Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider, and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His experience includes peer review, design assistance, durability analysis, construction administration, testing, and forensics of building envelope issues, and he is the building enclosures practice lead.\nJerry Abendroth, RBEC, RRO, CDT\nJerry Abendroth joined the IIBEC team as an education advisor in 2022. His responsibilities include review and revision of major course offerings from IIBEC and participation on educational committees. He also provides independent building enclosure consulting services on select projects.\nAbendroth and several partners established Building Exterior Solutions LLC in September 2008. His experience includes the new design and forensic evaluation of building enclosure systems. He has performed design peer reviews of building envelopes, as well as, building enclosure commissioning for many commercial, medical, and industrial projects. In addition, he has performed evaluations of building enclosure system failures on projects throughout the United States and has provided associated repair recommendations and designs. Abendroth has also been able to utilize his extensive knowledge of building enclosure systems in a litigation support role. Finally, with Abendroth’s previous construction experience, he is able to provide insight into the cost, constructability, and sequencing of building enclosure systems.\nAbendroth was formerly the owner of a firm specializing in federal government contracting. He completed roofing, waterproofing, and renovation projects, including roof designs and roof surveys, for the United States Air Force, the United States Coast Guard, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the United States Department of Labor. The firm’s projects included roof repair and replacement, mechanical upgrades, electrical upgrades, interior and exterior renovation, and building construction.\n\n\n\n \n
