It is targeted at current and prospective roof consultants, roof observers, architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, manufacturer representatives, students, and all other learners already in or planning to enter the building enclosure profession.\nThe course is divided into three one-hour modules:\n1.The first module, “Overview”, includes a brief history and evolution of roofing, definitions of common terms, and a breakdown of low- and steep-slope roof assembly and component types.\n2. The second module, “Water and Moisture”, covers basic roof drainage principles, an introduction to psychrometrics and hygrometry, an explanation of water vapor transport and diffusion, and a discussion of design strategies and components that can mitigate water and moisture issues.\n3.The third module, “Heat”, includes a description of the mechanisms of heat transfer both in general and in a roofing context, and an examination of the effect of roof components on code compliance, cost, comfort, and climate resilience.\nLearning Objectives:\nAt the end of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:\n\n\nSummarize the history and evolution of roofing practices.\nRecognize key roofing terms and describe common roofing assemblies and their components\nExplain mechanisms of water and vapor movement and heat transfer in in roofs and their applications to building materials and assemblies.\nRelate how design strategies and roof component choices protect buildings from water and moisture issues affect heat loss and heat gain, and consequently impact code compliance, cost, comfort, and climate resilience.\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nElizabeth Grant, PhD, RA\nElizabeth Grant is an architect, writer, researcher, and educator.  She prepares and reviews educational content for IIBEC, serves on the board of directors of the RCI-IIBEC Foundation, and is the IIBEC Virginia Chapter secretary.  Before starting her consulting practice in 2025, she provided research-based guidance to the roofing industry while at GAF, and was an associate professor at Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design.  In these roles, she wrote Integrating Building Performance with Design: An Architecture Student’s Guidebook and papers in Buildings & Cities, Architectural Science Review, the Journal of Green Building, the Journal of Architectural Engineering, IIBEC Interface, and Professional Roofing.  She also presented at academic and industry conferences and created webinars, blogs, and continuing education courses. As a licensed architect in Virginia and Florida, her experience includes designing health-care, civis, and educational buildings.  She is passionate about the the building enclosure and finding sustainable solutions to pressing architectural and environmental problems.\n\nScott Hinesley, F-IIBEC, RRC, PE \nHinesley is the president of REI Engineers Inc. (REI), an engineering consulting form with eight locations serving the eastern United States.  Hinesley received his degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University and worked for a multiservices engineering firm in Raleigh, North Carolina, for several years before joining REI in 1998.\nFor over 25 years, he has been an active member of IIBEC and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).  Hinesley previously served as president of IIBEC, of the North Carolina Chapter of ACEC, and of the IIBEC Carolinas Chapter.  He is currently a member of the IIBEC Education Committee and has previously served terms on the Ethics Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee, the IIBEC Interface Editorial Board, the ACEC/NC Legislative Committee and the ACEC/NC Buildings and Infrastructure Committee.  Hinesley is a Registered Roof Consultant, a licensed professional engineer, and a member of the IIBEC Jury of Fellows.  He also serves on the board of directors fo rthe RCI-IIBEC Foundation.\nCourse Author\nElizabeth Grant, PhD, RA\nCourse Reviewers\nRichard L.
