Awards Ceremony, Trade Show Shine During Day Three of the 2025 IIBEC Convention and Trade Show

March 8, 2025—The Annual Awards Ceremony and second day of IIBEC’s trade show, as well as the industry’s best education sessions, continued to provide attendees of the 2025 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show with a dynamic in-person experience.

During the Annual Awards Ceremony, IIBEC President Robért Hinojosa thanked the ceremony’ sponsor, Sika, and expressed gratitude for the conclusion of a successful trade show. IIBEC First Vice President Chris Dawkins offered an invocation and introduced IIBEC Executive Vice President and CEO Brian Pallasch, who played a video highlighting the second year of the Excellence in Building Enclosure Consulting Award winners. The four categories with winning entries were.

  • Commissioning: “The Heartland Community College Agriculture Complex,” submitted by John Wagner, AIA, NCARB, LEED GA, of Baumann Consulting
  • Building Enclosure: “The Butterfly,” submitted by Joshua Chambers, RRO, of RDH Building Science Inc.
  • Roofing: “The High Museum of Art: Wieland Pavilion and Anne Cox Chambers Wing Roof Replacement,” submitted by Bryce McQueen, AIA, NCARB, of Merick Inc.
  • Exterior Wall: “Ramova Theater Adaptive Reuse,” submitted by Patrick Giblin, RRC, RRO, of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc.

After Pallasch recognized 2024 IIBEC-credentialed individuals, he presented the Richard M. Horowitz Award, recognizing the best technical article that ran in 2024 in IIBEC Interface, to Karl Schaack, F–IIBEC, RRC, PE, for “Frustration with Fenestrations.”

Twenty-five out of 26 IIBEC chapters then received their Outstanding Chapter Awards, and 25-year, 30-year, 35-year, and 40-year IIBEC members were recognized from the stage.

The Herbert W. Busching Jr., PhD Memorial Award went to co-recipients Madan Mehta, PE, PhD, and Stephen Patterson, RRC, PE.

Three new Fellows were recognized: Paul Kompauer, PE, Douglas Stieve, RRC, AIA, and Stephen Patterson, RRC, PE.

The Emerging Professionals Award of Excellence went to Sean Campbell, RRO.

The Michael DeFrancesco Outstanding Volunteer Award went to Melissa Barrows-Lieb, RRC, RRO.

The IIBEC Staff Longevity Recognition Award went to two staff members who reached 10 years of service to IIBEC this past year: Alec Jeffries, vice president of membership and credentials, and Tara Cottle, director of chapter relations & website content.

The President’s Award went to Aaron Nelson, RBEC, RRO; Antai Romos Stevens, RRO; and Alejandrina Galicia Escobar.

The Joe F. Hale Lifetime Achievement Award went to Edward A. Sheridan, F–IIBEC, RBEC, PEng.

The EBEC award winners delivered more detailed presentations on each winning project following the Annual Awards Ceremony, during a session dedicated to the winning projects.

Afternoon education sessions were, “Phase III of Concrete Roof Deck Moisture Research,” “Expanding Possibilities: Engineered Design of Masonry Veneer,” “Enhancing Roofing Performance by Understanding the When and Where for Air and Vapor Control Layers,” “Net Zero/Carbon Neutral Retrofits, 140 Kendrick Case Study: Tactics, Tradeoffs, and Takeaways,” and “Facade Failures: Common Types, Causes, and Lessons Learned.”

New this year, the V.I.Platinum appreciation reception was a chance for IIBEC to express its deep appreciation to the sponsors of its convention and trade show. The day’s events concluded with the Emerging Professionals Reception.

Sunday, the final day of the 2025 convention, will  feature more industry-leading education, the Annual Meeting of the Members, the RCI-IIBEC Foundations’ Live Auction and  Reception, and the President’s Annual Banquet.
