Description
IIBEC members use various codes and standards in their daily work. This familiarity with model building codes has allowed IIBEC to influence and propose changes to the national model codes based on member feedback. While modifying the model codes is an efficient method at the national level, local adoptions of current codes vary widely in the United States. Delayed adoptions and local modifications have the potential to reduce stringency, but they also pose an opportunity for IIBEC members who are familiar with the local-amendment process. This webinar will give IIBEC members an introduction into the world of code development. Through this process, opportunities for proposing local amendments will be highlighted, including a recent success story related to adopting 2024 International Building Code amendments in the state of Georgia’s building code.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

1.tDetermine the dates for submission of code-change proposals for the 2027 International Code Council’s code development cycle.
2.tExplain how model building codes are modified, adopted, and amended in the United States.
3.tRecognize opportunities to influence code development in their local jurisdiction.
4.tRestate a story of IIBEC members’ success in amending the building code in Georgia.

Emily Lorenz, PE
International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants

Emily Lorenz, PE, F-ACI, specializes in building code and standards work and advocacy, currently representing the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants as its senior director of technical services. Lorenz actively participates as vice chair of the Envelope Subcommittee developing the commercial provisions of the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and as a voting member of several committees including the 2024 IECC Commercial Committee, the Envelope Subcommittee of ASHRAE 90.1, the ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability, and the American Concrete Institute’s building code subcommittee on sustainability. She also serves as an expert to ISO TC59SC17WG3 Environmental Declarations of Products.

Victor C. Martin, PE

Victor Martin is a professional engineer who has been involved with many specialized roofing, waterproofing facade, and fenestration-related projects. He has approximately 10 years of experience with many different types of materials, including masonry, roofing and waterproofing, exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS), fiber cement, and stucco systems. He has performed building enclosure condition assessments and storm damage assessments on numerous residential, commercial, and institutional projects. He has designed numerous roofs, waterproofing, and facade repairs and replacements. In addition to assessment and design, Martin has served as an expert on numerous high-profile building enclosure-related litigation projects.
