During the past month, IIBEC signed two coalition letters in support of building codes that were sent to US congressional committees.
The first letter was sent May 1, 2024, to the congressional Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management prior to a hearing titled, “Disaster Mitigation: Reviewing the Effectiveness and Costs of FEMA’s Resilience Programs.” The letter focused on the well-documented return on investment that the adoption and effective implementation of resilient building codes provides.
The second letter was sent May 22, 2024, to the congressional Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy, Climate, and Grid Security prior to a hearing titled, “Green Building Policies: Jeopardizing the American Dream of Homeownership.” The letter was written to correct the false narrative that building codes are pricing buyers out of the market.
IIBEC supports the regular, periodic update of codes and standards. IIBEC is a member of ASTM and the International Code Council and proudly participates in the consensus process used to develop the model codes that are then used by states to develop their codes.
