According to statistics of the U.S. Census Bureau, analyzed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), townhouse construction continues to outperform many other building sectors. Given the demographics of renters entering the for-sale market, as well as ongoing land constraints and the growing demand for walkable neighborhoods, this trend should continue.

In the four previous quarters ending in September 2018, townhome starts totaled 123,000—24% higher than the previous four quarters. Using a one-year moving average, the market share of new townhomes stands at 13.8% of all single-family starts, a post-recession high. The peak market share of the last 20 years for such construction was set in the first quarter of 2008.
