Canada Overtaken by China in LEED Buildings

China has wrested the number-one ranking from Canada for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings outside of the U.S. The program, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a rating system for design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings. The U.S. remains the global leader at 336.84 million square meters (2626 million sq. ft.) Next are:

  • China: 34.62 m2 and 931 LEED-certified projects
  • Canada: 34.39 m2 and 2586 projects
  • India: 15.90 m2 and 644 projects
  • Brazil: 5.43 m2 and 380 projects
  • Republic of Korea: 5.95 m2 and 97 projects
  • Taiwan: 5.66 m2 and 99 projects
  • Germany: 5.03 m2 and 215 projects
  • Turkey: 4.78 m2 and 191 projects
  • Sweden: 3.88 m2 and 210 projects
  • United Arab Emirates: 3.64 m2 and 180 projects
