– By Erica Reynolds, Chapter Vice President
The IIBEC Southern California Chapter was pleased to host a technical dinner meeting with an educational presentation about building movement joints on August 25 at the Boathouse on the Bay in Long Beach.
Participants were able to mingle prior to the presentation and dinner. Approximately 52 attendees were present, one of our most attended technical dinner meetings. We were able to provide this event thanks to our sponsors, Axis Building Leak Detection, Encore Building Products, Angelus Waterproofing & Restoration, Inc., and Sika EMSEAL!
Guests were greeted by Chapter Vice President Erica Reynolds who kicked things off with local chapter updates along with upcoming IIBEC event reminders.
Our technical speakers for the evening were Sophia Salah, PE, and Luke Niezelski of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger. Salah and Niezelski reviewed the basics of structural movements across and how to maintain continuity of the building enclosure. Through some great project examples, the presenters were able to review the basics of building movement joints design and specifications. Following the presentation, the attendees and speakers had a very in-depth discussion with many questions and responses.
Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner along the marina at Long Beach and watched a beautiful sunset. Guests earned 1 hour of continuing education approved by IIBEC and AIA. In October, we will be hosting another technical dinner meeting, “Extending the Life of the Roof Assembly,” presented by Dr. Scott Wood. We would like to extend our appreciation to Salah and Niezelski for their efforts in providing an informed presentation, as well as to Axis Building Leak Detection, Encore Building Products, Angelus Waterproofing & Restoration, Inc., and Emseal for their support of our chapter. We also extend our thanks to all of those who took the time to attend.
On August 18 and 19, the IIBEC Carolinas Chapter offered attendees 16 CEHs through the hosting of IIBEC’s “Waterproofing” educational course at the beautiful Tides Folly Beach Resort in Folly Beach, South Carolina. The event boasted 17 paid attendees, with 31 attendees total.
Presenters included Lonnie Coggins; Carolinas Chapter Vice President Nick Tribble, RRO; and Rick Cook, Jr., F-IIBEC, RBEC, RRC, RWC, REWC, REWO, RRO, CCS, LEED, CSRP, SC ACEM. Sponsors included Henry Co., Coastal Constructions Products, and Kennedy Richter Construction.
The chapter extends its thanks to the attendees for their participation, to their wonderful sponsors, and to the Tides Resort staff.

Intertek hosted a learning event for the members of IIBEC Arizona Chapter and local AIA members to demonstrate building enclosure testing equipment and provided a class on building enclosure testing requirements.
Jason O’Boyle, RRO, PE, gave an IIBEC- and AIA-approved presentation on the need for building enclosure testing, codes related to building enclosure testing, and commissioning. Pete Keener, RRC, RRO, CIT, demonstrated the use of capacitance meters, bubble tests, and Tramex RWS meters. Kelly Rice, Intertek, demonstrated the use of an ELD low voltage machine using the Detec System and conductive primer. The group was escorted outside to see how an AAMA 501.1 “nozzle test” is completed on a storefront window. The group was then shown the standard test method for water penetration of windows conducted at the specified air pressure differential by utilizing a wind generator employing an 84” diameter propeller (WOLF).
