John William MacKay Wells, 77, passed away at home on February 24, 2020, after a five-year battle with colon cancer. Wells was a longtime member of IIBEC and former president (2001-02) of the IIBEC Western Canada Chapter director from 2010-12 of the former Region V of IIBEC, covering Canada. He presented numerous educational classes for the association and was an Emeritus Member upon his death. Wells retired as the senior partner and president of Wells Klein Consulting Group, Inc. in 2013, but continued his consulting business, J.W. Wells Consulting, Inc. He was founding president of the B.C. Building Envelope Council and past chapter executive member of Construction Specifications Canada. He is survived by his wife Linda, son Douglas, daughter Shona, sister Sharon Margaret, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Dennis. Those who wish to do so may make a donation in his honor to either the BC Cancer Foundation or Victoria Hospice.
Charles Sietmann has been promoted to Associate Principal at Building Technology Consultants, Inc. (BTC).
Sietmann has been with BTC since 2005 and has earned several promotions throughout his tenure. He is an RRO, REWO, CCCA, and a CIT, with Roof Specifics. He is also an ICRI Certified Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician, Grade 1, a Certified ACI Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector, and an FAA Certified Remote Pilot with a small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Rating.
Sietmann is an active member of IIBEC and serves on IIBEC’s Document Competition Subcommittee. He is currently the Immediate Past President of the IIBEC Chicago Area Chapter’s Board of Directors, and the Chair of the Marketing Committee and the Chapter Service Award Committee for the IIBEC Chicago Area Chapter. He is also the current Treasurer of CAC-Building Envelope Foundation NFP (CAC-BEF).
James “Jay” Dougherty, RRC, was hired as a senior consultant at Dedicated Roof and Hydro Solutions, LLC, working out of Franklinville, NJ. He joined Roof Consulting Services, Inc. in 2010, where he performed roof condition evaluations and moisture surveys. From 1982 to 2010, Dougherty managed Dougherty Contracting Company.
Doug Stieve has been promoted to Senior Principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE). He joined WJE’s Princeton office in 1991 and relocated to New York City in 2000, shortly after the office was established. As a building enclosure consultant with a specialization in roofing and waterproofing, Stieve has experience with many types of materials, including low- and steep-slope roofing as well as plaza deck, vegetative roof, and subgrade waterproofing systems. He also has experience with masonry, glazed curtainwalls, natural stone, and EIFS. He has managed the design and construction period services for several multimillion-dollar repair and rehabilitation projects and has provided consulting services to architects, contractors, and owners for new buildings. Stieve has worked on some of the largest and most complicated waterproofing projects in the New York metropolitan area.
He chairs IIBEC’s Technical Advisory Subcommittee, and has previously served on the Document Competition Committee, and was Region Director of IIBEC Region I. He has been an IIBEC member for nearly 20 years, and holds an RRC designation.
Russell “Russ” Murphy, RRC, has retired after four decades in the building enclosure industry. Murphy received a BA in sociology and criminal justice from St. Ambrose College in 1977, and in 1981, began his consulting career. His career took hold in Iowa, providing materials and design support for architects, owners, and contractors. He joined Professional Service Industries and relocated to Detroit, growing a dedicated consulting group. After four years, Murphy relocated to Chicago for two years, then moved on to St. Louis as a principle consultant and vice president of Professional Service Industries, Inc. for 18 years, where he developed and managed building envelope consulting for an international owner building portfolio. Murphy joined RCI (now IIBEC) in 1988 and earned his RRC in 1992 and his 30-year pin in 2019. His contributions and achievements include RRC Exam Development Subcommittee, RICOWI/RCI Board Liaison, RCI Ethics Course Proctor, Sarnafil and Firestone Advisory Committees, CSI member from 1986–1991, winner of two IIBEC Document Competition Awards, IIBEC Convention Student Liaison, and IIBEC Convention speaker convener. Murphy and his wife Cindy have purchased a home in the St. Louis area. “Don’t forget the wave,” Murphy calls as he motors off in his Corvette.
