Indian firm Rhino Machines has partnered with R+D Studio architects to create the “silica plastic block.” Composed of 80% recycled sand waste/foundry dust and 20% mixed plastic waste, the goal is to help eliminate India’s plastic waste while creating a sustainable, inexpensive building material.
The bricks are claimed to be 2.5 times stronger than clay bricks, and are 25% lighter. Mixed plastic waste is also used as a bonding agent, reducing the need for water in mixing, and subsequently the need for a curing process.
