Simplifying Whole Building Airtightness

About the Submission

Title: Simplifying Whole Building Airtightness

Topic Tags: Air Barrier, Building Enclosure (BE), Codes & Standards

Air Barrier Sub Topic: Performance

Building Enclosure Sub Topic: Design

Codes & Standards Sub Topic: Model Codes

Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Recommended Prerequisite Knowledge: General understanding of air barrier systems and assemblies in the building enclosure

Does the content of this presentation meet the criteria for AIA Health, Safety, and Welfare using the above guidelines: Yes

Why this meets above criteria: Airtight building envelopes help to mitigate moisture intrusion, the infiltration of pollutants and improve the overall indoor air quality of buildings, thus helping to keep the interior occupants healthier.

Presentation Topic Category Codes and Regulations

Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Understand the updated to air barrier requirements in IECC 2024 and 2022 ASHRAE 90.1.

Objective 2: Define whole building airtightness testing and ways to make sure it is done correctly.

Objective 3: Describe what needs to be included in construction documents for an airtight enclosure.

Objective 4: Analyze five of the most frequently missed interface details that impact airtightness.

Abstract Topic Descripion

Whole Building Airtightness Testing, often referred to as “blower door testing”, is at the forefront of building performance verification, especially with the onset of net zero energy targets. Widespread adoption is currently limited to residential codes, but there is considerable momentum in the commercial space. The IECC 2024 with the adoption of 2022 ASHRAE 90.1 will require whole building airtightness testing for most commercial buildings. This presentation will outline the new commercial building airtightness requirements, test methods ASTM E779 and ASTM E3158, impact of airtightness requirements on design and construction, and the importance of using a qualified test technician.
