Registered Roof Consultant – RRC®

An applicant must meet specific requirements to become a Registered Roof Consultant. These requirements include verifiable levels of work experience and education, high ethical standards, and a satisfactory score on both the RRC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) Exams. Those that hold other IIBEC consultant registrations are exempt from having to take the GCK exam. There is no separate application for the GCK Exam, as approval of the RRC application will qualify candidates to take the general exam. See additional information about the GCK Exam below.

RRC Application Requirements

Applicants must have at least 4 years of roof consulting experience. Verification of one’s education and/or work experience is done using a point system. A minimum of 100 points is required and is based on one of the following:

work experience only
experience and education
experience, education and professional registration

70 hours of continuing education through attendance and a minimum of 3 seminars within the roofing, waterproofing and/or exterior wall industries are needed for application approval.

RRC Application Process

Candidates are encouraged to use the online interactive electronic process to complete the application.

A user account is all that is required to log in to the portal to complete an application. You may enter and save the information until the application has been completed. It can then be electronically submitted to IIBEC for review and approval. Once begun, the application must be completed and submitted to IIBEC within one year or the application in process will expire.

The computer-based RRC exam is available at over 1,000 conveniently located testing centers worldwide. 75 days should be allowed for processing once an application is submitted to IIBEC. Applications will be processed within 45 days for an additional expediting fee ($100 member/$150 nonmember). An exam registration form will be provided to the candidate when the application has been approved. Once registered, the candidate will be contacted by Meazure Learning, the internet-based testing company, to schedule an exam.

RRC Exam

The RRC online exam has 60 multiple-choice questions that involve the following topics: codes and standards, materials and properties, assemblies, analysis and design, and evaluation and testing. Some problems may involve mathematical computations that require familiarity with basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry. The exam is 4 hours in duration.

RRC Fees

A renewal fee is required annually, as well as 12 roofing, waterproofing, and/or exterior wall related continuing educational hours (CEHs). All registrants are encouraged to self-report CEHs via the IIBEC website.

General Consultant Knowledge Exam

This exam tests knowledge common to all components of the building envelope (roofing, waterproofing and exterior walls). This was designed to produce a more efficient testing process, eliminating common information being tested for each consultant designation. Currently, to earn the RRC designation, a candidate must pass the general exam as well as the RRC Exam. This pertains to the Registered Waterproofing Consultant designation, and in 2017, the Registered Exterior Wall Consultant designations as well.

If only one of the two exams is passed, the candidate will be required to retake only the exam he or she failed. The exam that has been passed will be valid until the candidate passes the other exam and the first consultant designation is earned. Candidates who do not initially pass an exam will have the option to retry every four months with a valid application.

Once passed, the general exam will not need to be retaken for the other IIBEC consultant designations.

The exam is computer-based and offered at over 1,000 conveniently located testing locations. Visit Meazure Learning to locate a testing center near you. The exam is 4 hours in length and consists of 90 multiple-choice questions which test knowledge in the following general consulting areas: ethics, general skills, communications and reports, codes and standards, design process, procurement process, agreements, and construction administration.

All questions pertain to general consulting practices and are applicable to all consultants despite of the discipline (roofing, waterproofing, exterior walls).

New Board, Foundations’ Auction, and Annual Presidents Banquet Mark Final Day of the 2025 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show

IIBEC announced the results of its recent board and officer elections during the final day of its 2025 International Convention and Trade Show on Sunday, March 9, during its Annual Meeting of the Members. The day also included the RCI-IIBEC Foundations’ Live Auction and the President’s Annual Banquet, as well as numerous education sessions.

IIBEC Announces 2025–2026 Board of Directors

Orlando, Florida—The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) on March 9, 2025, announced the results of its recent board and officer elections. IIBEC President Robért Hinojosa, F-IIBEC, RBEC, RRO, REWO, PE, CDT, passed the president’s gavel to new IIBEC President Chris Dawkins, PE, making Hinojosa IIBEC’s immediate past president. Jennifer Hogan, REWC, RRO, BArchSci, CET, CRE, LEED AP, Certified Passive House Consultant, is IIBEC’s new first vice president, and Burt Carver, RRC, RRO, is IIBEC’s new second vice president. Joining the IIBEC Executive Committee as its secretary-treasurer is Julie Palmer, LEED AP. New to the IIBEC Board of Directors for 2025–2026 are Region I Director Norm Crouse, RRO, and Region III Director Eric R. Raatz, RBEC, CBECxP, RRO. Re-elected for a second term are Region II Director Nicholas Tribble, RRO, CCI2, and Region VII Director Stephanie Robinson, BASc, PEng.
