In building enclosure consulting, however, many problems originate long before the P point. The D-I-P-F curve is a conceptual adaptation of reliability-engineering models that maps the roof’s life cycle from initial design decisions through the onset of measurable degradation and eventual functional failure. The D-I-P-F curve represents a conceptual framework synthesizing field data, failure timelines, and industry best practices, rather than a curve generated through numerical modeling. Sealing the Deal: Avoid Getting Blown Away by the New IECC Air Leakage Requirements September 15, 2026 Any level of condensation in building enclosures that results in damage to a substrate constitutes a failure. If the presence of moisture due to condensation remains on organic surfaces for too long, this failure may be compounded by organic growth. These failures stem from either faulty design or installation and are always due to improper placement of one of the four control layers (air, water, vapor, or thermal), or a discontinuity in one or more of these control layers.
