By IIBEC Georgia Chapter President Rich Chapman

The IIBEC Georgia Chapter has worked hard over the past couple of years, adding events, encouraging improved attendance, and receiving sponsorships. With the increased activity has come a surplus of money, which was invested back into IIBEC, the chapter’s speakers, and the chapter’s future. The IIBEC Georgia Chapter was also able to offer a scholarship for students in the state of Georgia. This scholarship rewards students pursuing a degree in architecture or construction management who meet a specific criteria based on merit, decided on a point system. Cihan Inkaya, a senior at Kennesaw State University, is the chapter’s first $1000 recipient. Inkaya holds a 3.0 GPA and is finishing his degree in construction management. He will pursue a career in construction within the greater Atlanta area.

He then went on to discuss the concept of drainage wall or cavity wall EIFS assemblies. The drainage wall assembly materials and their configurations were explained. Possible failure points within these assemblies were also discussed. The presentation concluded with a listing of the pros and cons of both drainage and barrier EIFS assemblies, covering the materials, building types, location of installation, available labor, cost, scheduling, and long-term performance.

Approximately 24 attendees made their way to JT Schmid’s to enjoy some great networking along with refreshing beverages and some delicious dinner plates. The guest speakers were Kent Lawrence, senior account representative of Eagle Roofing Products, and Michele Morse, senior architectural coordinator for Eagle Roofing Products. Lawrence and Morse presented on “Concrete Roof Tiles,” highlighting key topics such as design versatility of concrete tiles; the manufacturing process of concrete roof tiles, from the introduction of raw materials to finished product; installation methods; and key performance characteristics of concrete roof tiles. In addition, they discussed the longevity, durability, and overall life cycle cost analysis of concrete roof tiles compared to other steep-sloped roofing options.

The event was a success, and the chapter members thanks both presenters for their time and energy in providing an informative and enjoyable multimedia presentation, complete with many hands-on product samples to keep the audience engaged. Attendees earned one hour of continuing education approved by IIBEC and AIA. The chapter members also extend their appreciation to the event’s tabletop sponsor, Robert Larez of Axis Building Envelope Design.
