By Emily Lorenz, PE, F-ACI
IIBEC Codes and Standards Advisor Emily Lorenz and a team of IIBEC members successfully testified on two critical code change proposals during the ICC public comment hearings in Hartford, Connecticut, last week.
IIBEC members successfully opposed proposal S-46 that would have removed the reroofing section (1512) from the International Building Code and inserted a pointer to the International Existing Building Code. There were several concerns with the proposal, and industry groups from ARMA, FSC, SPRI, and others joined the opposition to this change.
IIBEC members advanced approval of a proposal that adds a new section to chapter 14 that requires design professionals to consider shrinkage when designing exterior cladding; it also adds “exterior wall coverings” to the list of items that must be considered in Section 2304.3.3. This proposal was originally submitted by IIBEC and went through two rounds of committee action hearings before being approved to move into the online governmental voting, which closes at the end of next month.
Final disposition on all changes will not be finished until after the online governmental consensus vote. Optimistically, the efforts put forth by the IIBEC members will be successful and will be reflected in the 2027 version of the International Building Code.
IIBEC members in attendance included Chris Giffin, F-IIBEC, RRC, AIA; David Hawn, F-IIBEC, RRC, CEM; Jackie LaDuke, RRO; Victor Martin; Keith Parker, RBEC, CBECxP, RRO, CCS, CCCA; Doug Stieve, F-IIBEC, RRC, AIA; Anthony Travaglini, REWC; and John Wylie, F-IIBEC, RBEC, RRO, PE.
