General Consultant Knowledge Exam (GCK)

Overview

Earning the REWC credential validates a consultant’s knowledge of exterior wall systems, ability to safeguard buildings against air and moisture intrusion, ensure code compliance, and optimize the performance and aesthetics of the building enclosure.

REWCs commonly:

Design and review wall system details, drawings, and technical specifications for new and existing buildings.
Assess and diagnose building envelope and exterior wall conditions to identify performance issues.
Recommend repair, restoration, or recladding solutions that improve performance and extend service life.
Observe construction activities to ensure quality control, proper installation, and adherence to contract documents.
Advise architects, engineers, and owners on exterior wall material compatibility, code compliance, and system integration.
Document evaluations, testing results, and design recommendations to support durable, high-performing wall assemblies.

Application Requirements

Experience: A minimum of six (6) years of exterior wall consulting experience.
Points System: Accumulate at least 100 points through project experience alone.
Project Experience: Provide at least 10 projects from personal work history highlighting tasks and services relating to exterior wall consulting.
Continuing Education: Complete 150 hours of continuing education, including at least three seminars and/or courses within the roofing, waterproofing, and/or exterior wall industries.
- Advanced degrees or professional registrations may count towards the 150 hours.
- CEH within the past 10 years are accepted
- Online IIBEC courses are offered – see below for related resources.
Examinations: Achieve satisfactory scores on both the REWC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) exams.
- If passed GCK previously, it is not required to be taken again.

Application Process

Online Application: Create a user account and complete the application through the IIBEC Community Portal.
- Once started, applications must be completed and submitted within one (1) year; otherwise, the application will expire.

Processing Time: Standard processing time is up to 75 days.
- Expedited processing (within 45 days) is available for an additional fee.
  - Expediting fee: $100 members/$150 nonmembers
Approval: Upon approval, information on how to register for the exam(s) will be provided.

Exam

Three-hour exam featuring 75 multiple-choice questions involving the following topics:
- Codes and Standards
- Design
- Installation and Repair
- Investigations
- Materials
- Testing
Achieve satisfactory score on both the RWC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) exams.
- If passed GCK previously, it is not required to be taken again.
- If only one of the two (2) exams is passed, candidate will only be required to retake outstanding exam.
Testing is completed through Meazure Learning, available at over 1,000 testing centers.
- Retakes available every four (4) months. Registration and exam payment completed each time.
- Exam must be taken and passed within two (2) years of application approval.

Continuing Education
- - Complete 12 building enclosure-related continuing education hours (CEHs).
  - CEHs can be self-reported through the IIBEC Community Portal
  - Continuing Education Hour (CEH) requirements and renewal guidelines are available in the Resources section below. Credential holders are responsible for reviewing and complying with the current CEH Requirements & Guidelines applicable to their credential.

General Consultant Knowledge Exam (GCK)

Exam tests knowledge common to all components of the building enclosure (roofing, waterproofing, and exterior walls).
Four-hour exam, consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions testing knowledge in the following areas:
- Agreements
- Codes and Standards
- Communications and reports
- Construction administration
- Ethics
- General skills
- Procurement process
Once passed, the GCK exam will not need to be retaken when applying for additional consultant designations.
