Overview

Earning the RWC designation demonstrates a commitment to quality, technical understanding, continuing education, and the long-term integrity of the built environment. RWCs are essential in preventing costly failures, extending building life, and delivering confidence to owners and project teams alike.

RWCs commonly:

Advise owners, architects, and contractors on appropriate waterproofing materials, detailing, and code requirements.
Develop and review waterproofing designs, and technical specifications for performance and durability.
Investigate and diagnose sources of water intrusion in above- and below-grade systems.
Provide objective recommendations for repair, restoration, and long-term moisture protection.
Conduct on-site observations to verify waterproofing materials, installation methods, and quality standards are met.
Prepare comprehensive reports that document conditions, testing results, and recommendations for lasting building protection.

Application Requirements

Experience: A minimum of four (4) years of waterproofing experience.
Project Experience: Provide at least 10 projects from personal work history that highlight specific tasks and services relating to waterproofing consulting.
Continuing Education: Complete 70 hours of continuing education, including attendance/completion of a minimum of three (3) seminars and/or courses within the roofing, waterproofing, and/or exterior wall industries.
- CEHs within past 10 years are accepted.
Points System: Accumulate at least 100 points through a combination of work experience, education, and/or professional registration.
Examinations: Achieve satisfactory scores on both the RWC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) exams.
- If passed GCK previously, it is not required to be taken again.

Application Process

Online Application: Create a user account and complete the application through the IIBEC Community Portal.
- Once started, applications must be completed and submitted to IIBEC within one (1) year; otherwise, the application will expire.

Processing Time: Standard processing time is up to 75 days.
- Expedited processing (within 45 days) is available for an additional fee.
  - Expediting fee: $100 members/$150 nonmembers
Approval: Upon approval, information on how to register for the exam(s) will be provided.

4-hour exam featuring 60 multiple-choice questions that involve the following topics:
- Analysis and Design
- Assemblies
- Codes and Standards
- Evaluation and Testing
- Materials and Properties
Unless already taken and passed, a passing score on the General Consultant Knowledge Exam (GCK) exam is required.
- If only one of the two (2) exams is passed, candidate will only be required to retake the exam they failed.
- The exam that has been passed will be valid until the candidate passes the failed exam and the first consultant designation is earned.
Testing is completed through Meazure Learning, available at over 1,000 testing centers.
- Exam must be taken and passed within (2) years of application approval.
- Retakes available every four (4) months. Registration and exam payment required each time.

General Consultant Knowledge Exam (GCK)

Exam tests knowledge common to all components of the building enclosure (roofing, waterproofing, and exterior walls).
Four-hour exam, consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions testing knowledge in the following areas:
- Agreements
- Codes and Standards
- Communications and reports
- Construction administration
- Ethics
- General skills
- Procurement process
Once passed, the GCK exam will not need to be retaken when applying for additional consultant designations.
