IIBEC Scores a Victory as Alabama DOT Changes Procurement Regulation
By John Boling IIBEC is pleased to report that the Alabama Department of Transportation (AL DOT) agreed to modify regulations…
Applicants must meet specific requirements to become Registered Waterproofing Consultants. These requirements include verifiable levels of work experience and education, high ethical standards, and a satisfactory score on both the RWC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) exams.
Applicants who currently hold a Registered Roof Consultant (RRC®) and/or Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC®) designation(s) are exempt from taking the GCK exam.
Although there is no separate application for the GCK exam, as approval of the RWC application will qualify candidates to take this exam, there is a study guide available.
See additional information about the GCK exam/study guide below.
Applicants must have at least 4 years of waterproofing consulting experience. Verification of an applicant’s education and/or work experience is done using a point system.
A minimum of 100 points is required and is based on one of the following:

90 days should be allowed for processing once an application is submitted to IIBEC. The application will be processed within 60 days for an additional expediting fee ($50 member/$100 nonmember).
The RWC exam is administered online at over 1,000 conveniently located testing centers worldwide. An exam registration form will be provided to the candidate when the application has been approved. Once registered, the candidate will be contacted by Scantron, the Internet-based testing company, to schedule an exam.
Computer-based testing is offered on demand to approved candidates subject to individual testing center hours and availability. Consult Scantron for testing center locations.
This exam tests knowledge common to all components of the building envelope (roofing, waterproofing and exterior walls). This was designed to produce a more efficient testing process, eliminating common information being tested for each consultant designation. To earn the RWC designation, a candidate must pass the general exam as well as the RWC Exam. However, applicants who currently hold the Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) and/or Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC) designation(s) are exempt from taking the GCK Exam.
If only one of the two exams is passed (the general or the technical), the candidate will be required to retake only the exam he or she failed. The exam that has been passed will be valid until the candidate passes the other exam and the first consultant designation is earned. Candidates who do not pass an exam will have the option to retry every four months with a valid application.
The exam is computer-based and offered at over 1,000 conveniently located testing locations. Visit Scantron for testing center locations. The exam is 4 hours in length and consists of 90 multiple-choice questions which test knowledge in the following general consulting areas: ethics, general skills, communications and reports, codes and standards, design processes, procurement processes, agreements, and construction administration.
All questions pertain to consulting practices in general and are applicable to all consultants, in spite of the discipline (roofing, waterproofing, exterior walls).
