In January, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed a bill that would require all public facilities to be designed with a minimum roof slope of 3:12. If enacted, this legislation would effectively prohibit the use of low-slope roof systems on public buildings.

IIBEC strongly opposes this measure due to its significant technical, cost, and design implications, and because it limits the ability of licensed design professionals to apply performance-based solutions appropriate to specific building types. We have taken an active leadership role in coordinating opposition efforts alongside other roofing and building industry organizations. A joint letter and supporting fact sheet outlining the industry’s concerns were issued to the Mississippi Senate Committee on Public Property by 12 leading roofing organizations. In addition, IIBEC submitted its own formal letter and launched a targeted grassroots campaign to engage IIBEC members in Mississippi and prevent the bill from being enacted.
