The Masonry Wall Systems program is ideal for building professionals who want to gain an in-depth understanding of masonry wall construction and the factors that affect durability and performance. The course begins with a focus on new construction, with an overview of the different types of masonry used in wall construction, the materials’ properties, and design considerations for optimal performance. Also covered are masonry accessories and their function within the wall system. Best practices for the construction process will be outlined, offering insights on how installation can affect the ultimate effectiveness and durability of a wall system. The second part of the course will address how to identify and remedy problems in existing masonry walls. Common failures associated with masonry walls will be identified, and examples of the causes and effects of each type of problem will be presented. Different forms of masonry repairs will be discussed with reference to case histories and detailed examples of how each repair can be performed in the field.

Joshua Summers, REWC, SE, PE Building Technology Consultants, Inc., Arlington Heights, IL Josh Summers is a principal structural engineer at his firm. He is a licensed structural engineer and a licensed professional engineer. During his 23-year career, he has managed over 400 structural repair and facade rehabilitation projects. Summers’ experience includes investigation of building facades and water leakage issues, structural analysis and design, condition assessments, nondestructive testing, and failure investigation.
A comprehensive course text book is provided to all attendees.
