IIBEC’s latest initiative to engage emerging professionals officially launched on July 10, 2025, with the debut of the Blueprints of an Enclosure Career webinar series. More than 150 attendees registered to hear from IIBEC Past President Amy Peevey, F-IIBEC, REWC, RRO, PE, CDT, as she shared career insights, lessons learned, and advice for those entering or advancing in the building enclosure profession.

The event was hosted by the IIBEC Emerging Professionals Committee and moderated by committee member Mallory Buckley, RRO, PE. The webinar was free to attend and allowed participants to submit questions and interact directly with Peevey.

Peevey began by outlining her path into architectural engineering, influenced by her father and driven by her combined interests in math, science, and art. Her early professional experiences included working with a forensic engineer and joining a multidisciplinary firm, which helped shape her understanding of the broader architectural engineering profession.

Her transition to building enclosure work was spurred by market conditions in Houston, where rapid construction during an oil boom created demand for enclosure expertise. “Things were falling off buildings, and roofs were collapsing,” Peevey explained, underscoring the need for better quality control and building enclosure solutions.

To establish credibility and expand her knowledge, Peevey contributed to ASTM committees and publications, but she emphasized how organizations like IIBEC (formerly RCI) helped her focus on enclosure-specific challenges. She carries two IIBEC credentials: Registered Roof Observer (2008) and Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (2014).

When asked why she started her own firm, Peevey pointed to a desire to align her work with her passion for building enclosures and structural systems. “In order to serve my clients, it made sense for me to break off,” she said.

Peevey also addressed the challenges and advantages of being a woman in a male-dominated field. Her involvement in professional organizations helped raise her visibility and credibility. “It was easy for people to remember me and to have influence as a result,” she noted.

Her leadership journey within IIBEC began at the local level, through the Gulf Coast Chapter, and expanded nationally through her participation on a number of IIBEC committees. As IIBEC president, Peevey said her key accomplishments including the launch of Project Excel and an overhaul of the organization’s Strategic Plan.

In closing, she encouraged emerging professionals to approach the field with curiosity and preparation. “Every day I show up to work, and typically I learn something new,” she said. “That eagerness and curiosity is important, as well as confidence and a little humility.”

The next Blueprints of an Enclosure Career webinar is scheduled for October 2, 2025, and will feature Tai Mahmuti, PE, QEWI, QPSI, discussing his experience in launching and leading his own firm. Registration for the event will open soon.
