Longtime IIBEC member Brian Barrows, RRC, CCS, CSRP, died on June 3, 2023. According to a LinkedIn post from Barrows’ daughter, Melissa Barrows-Lieb, RRC, RRO, CCCA, CDT, the cause of death was dementia.
A member of IIBEC from 1986 to 2022, Barrows obtained his Registered Roof Consultant® credential in 1991. An active member of IIBEC’s Chicago Area Chapter, Barrows was a frequent speaker at IIBEC events. Among his nearly 40 IIBEC speaking engagements were talks on life-cycle costs, roof warranties, RRO ethics, reroofing considerations, and building codes.
In her LinkedIn tribute to her father, Barrows-Lieb wrote, “I feel so grateful to have had as much time with my father as I did. He is not just my father, he is my hero and mentor. He was there in the infancy of roof consulting. He made it a family business that supports our family, and many others, while solving building owners’ roof issues. … Following in his footsteps is an honor and a blessing. … Thank you for the lessons we learned and memories we shared.”
In an email to IIBEC, Barrows-Lieb elaborated on her father’s dedication to the building enclosure industry.
“He loved IIBEC and was a strong proponent of ensuring all of our field inspectors maintained continued education and IIBEC credentials,” she wrote. “He educated building owners on the importance of IIBEC and credentialed members, whether these building owners became a client or not. That is how much he believed in IIBEC’s essential value to the industry. He specified in many owners’ roof-asset-management program manuals the use of only RRO- and RRC-credentialed people for their roofing needs, ensuring a level of quality and ethics.”
