Enzo Amirzadeh, in a sport jacket and button down shirt, explains building commissioning.IIBEC recently debuted a new video on building commissioning—part of a series of videos explaining the role of IIBEC Consultants in ensuring safe, sustainable structures in the built environment.

The video, “Building Enclosure Commissioning: The Key to Performance,” includes comments from IIBEC Consultants Keith Parker III, CBECxP, RBEC®, RRO®; Jason O’Boyle, CBECxP, REWC®, RRO, PE; Steve Hentz, CBECxP, RBEC, REWO®, PE; Enzo Amirzadeh, CBECxP, RRO; and past president of IIBEC, Richard L. Cook Jr., F-IIBEC, CBECxP, RBEC, RRO, REWO.

“The [building] owner’s operational needs, that’s really the focus of commissioning—getting started early in the project design, understanding the owner’s goals,” said Parker in the video. “When you have varying trades working together, that’s when the commissioning process can substantiate that you are meeting certain goals, whether that be through visual inspections, testing, [or] infrared imaging.”

Added O’Boyle, “During design phase, we’re oftentimes collaborating heavily with the designer and their engineering team to work through details, work through specifications, work through systems to make sure we have the right technical content so that the owner obtains accurate and complete bidding.“

IIBEC welcomed its first class of Certified Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (CBECxP) certification holders in May of 2023. From that initial group of 15, IIBEC has grown the CBECxP program to 36 certification holders. IIBEC is pursuing ANAB accreditation for the CBECxP program as part of its efforts to become a fully accredited certification body.

“Our new commissioning video explains what building commissioning is and the long-term value commissioning brings to building owners and facility managers,” said IIBEC Executive Vice President and CEO Brian Pallasch, CAE. “I encourage anyone wondering how a certified CBECxP IIBEC Consultant might add value to their project to watch this outstanding video.”

IIBEC President Chris Dawkins, PE, added, “Commissioning is growing in importance for building owners and designers—and for IIBEC Consultant members. We couldn’t be more proud of how far our CBECxP certification program has come, and we know our new video will only highlight the need for more certified CBECxP IIBEC Consultants.”

The new video joins a growing collection of IIBEC videos—including those focused on roofing, waterproofing, and exterior walls—available at https://vimeo.com/iibec2020. For more information on IIBEC’s CBECxP certification, visit iibec.org/credentials/cbecxp.
