This two-day course is a classroom extension of the RCI Manual of Practice. It provides an overview of consultant roles that are unique to the roofing, exterior walls, and waterproofing industry. It also identifies the consultant practices that are common to these three broad disciplines. In simple terms, it examines building envelope consultants and discusses what they do and how they do it.

Speakers

Neal Johnson

Neal Johnson is the president of Neal Johnson, LLC, an architectural firm specializing in building enclosure consulting and forensic services covering Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama. Johnson has over 35 years of widely varied experience as a practicing architect. He holds a bachelor of science degree in architecture from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Johnson is the Region IV Region director, founding chair of the Louisiana Branch of IIBEC, has presented numerous IIBEC courses, and is a past national chair of its Ethics Committee.

Jerry Teitsma

Jerry Teitsma is IIBEC’s education advisor and a longtime member of the organization. As former director of education, Teitsma has been instrumental in writing many of IIBEC’s courses on roofing topics. Jerry has a bachelor of science degree in wood technology and a master’s degree in building construction from Michigan State. He has earned his RRC and RRO registrations from IIBEC and his Certified Construction Contract Administration from CSI. Recently, Teitsma received the Lifetime Achievement Award from IIBEC.

The course is designed to provide a background in procedures and policies important to practicing consultants, whether they are part of the A/E team or act as design professionals. It is a recommended foundation course for anyone interested in becoming more specialized in his/her professional work with roofs, walls, or waterproofing.

Speakers

Jerry Abendroth

Jerry Abendroth joined Building Exterior Solutions, LLC (BES) in September 2008. His experience includes the design and forensic evaluation of building enclosure systems. Abendroth has performed design peer reviews of building enclosures, as well as building enclosure commissioning for many commercial, medical, and industrial projects. In addition, he has performed evaluations of building failures on projects throughout the U.S. and provided associated repair recommendations and designs. Litigation support is another area of practice in which Abendroth has been able to utilize his extensive knowledge of building enclosure systems. Finally, he provides insight into the cost, constructability, and sequencing of building enclosure systems.

The two-day course is designed for the practicing waterproofing consultant and those who are aspiring to become a Registered Waterproofing Consultant. This course focuses on split-slab plaza deck systems, surface-applied waterproofing, and below-grade waterproofing. The course starts with a review of differences between roofing, dampproofing, and waterproofing.

Other topics include waterproofing materials and accessories used for various applications, design and specification, application techniques; and a thorough review of concrete used as a substrate for waterproofing, including typical concrete repair materials and techniques used for restoration of concrete slabs prior to application of waterproofing systems.
