NRCA has named Helene Hardy Pierce, vice president of technical services, codes, and industry relations at GAF, as recipient of its J.A. Piper Award. The award recognizes roofing professionals who have devoted constant, outstanding service to NRCA and the roofing industry. Pierce is the first woman to have earned the honor in its 72-year history. Pierce has been in the roofing industry for 38 years. She serves on NRCA’s board of directors and on several of its committees. She has also served on the board of directors for the RCI Foundation, the Coalition for Procurement Reform, the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (former president), and of the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, where she was also president. In addition, Pierce has been active with ARMA, ASTM International, and SPRI. She was named a Fellow of RCI in 2005, where she serves on the Interface Peer Review Board and has contributed to the association as a speaker and author of numerous articles.
The RCI Foundation is supporting the restoration of the Choctaw Academy, the first federally funded, racially integrated, non-military, and non-missionary school in the history of the United States. The school, operated on the plantation of the ninth Vice President of the United States, Richard Mentor Johnson, brought together the sons of 17 different Native American tribes, educating over 600 students in its 23-year run. If every RCI member donated $150, we would meet our goal immediately. If you or your company would like to join us in preserving a fascinating piece of our American history, please visit the Choctaw Academy page on our website.
