July 2023 President’s Message: Better Together June 28, 2023 Congratulations to the first 15 recipients of the Certified Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (CBECxP®) credential! I am so proud that these professionals successfully completed the rigorous application process and passed the CBECxP exam. I look forward to congratulating more credential holders in the future! As we celebrate this milestone, I want to acknowledge the IIBEC staff and volunteers who have developed and supported our credentialing program. Thanks to your hard work, IIBEC continues to meet our strategic goal of “lead[ing] the industry in building enclosure consulting credentials.”
Roofing Industry Calls on Congress to Fully Fund Career and Technical Education June 22, 2023 Earlier this month IIBEC joined with our roofing industry colleagues to call on the US Congress to provide more funding for career and technical education in the states. On June 8, 2023, 11 roofing industry associations signed a letter to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging them to support a robust increase in funding for Perkins State Grants for career and technical education (CTE). Brian Barrows, July 4, 1947–June 3, 2023 June 22, 2023 Longtime IIBEC member Brian Barrows, RRC, CCS, CSRP, died on June 3, 2023. According to a LinkedIn post from Barrows’ daughter, Melissa Barrows-Lieb, RRC, RRO, CCCA, CDT, the cause of death was dementia. A member of IIBEC from 1986 to 2022, Barrows obtained his Registered Roof Consultant® credential in 1991. An active member of IIBEC’s Chicago Area Chapter, Barrows was a frequent speaker at IIBEC events. Among his nearly 40 IIBEC speaking engagements were talks on life-cycle costs, roof warranties, RRO ethics, reroofing considerations, and building codes. IIBEC Members

IIBEC Helps Restore QBS Intent for Architect and Engineering Design Work in Alabama June 16, 2023 When a coalition working to restore qualifications-based selection (QBS) requirements for architects and engineers needed support – IIBEC got the call. To help the effort, IIBEC sent a letter on June 6, 2023, asking Alabama legislators to concur with Governor Kay Ivey’s executive amendment to restore Senate Bill 309 to its original intent of requiring the qualifications-based selection (QBS) process for the procurement of architectural and engineering design services. The successful effort concluded when each chamber concurred with the governor’s request, thus clearing the legislation for her signature. Government Relations

Foundation Announces 2023–24 Scholarship Recipients June 15, 2023 The RCI-IIBEC Foundation is excited to announce the eight winners of its 2023–2024 Robert W. Lyons and RCI Lewis W. Newlan academic scholarships. The $5000 Lyons scholarship is specifically for undergraduate education expenses for students studying construction or building sciences, architecture, or engineering. The RCI Lewis W. Newlan scholarship is for $2500 and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students—again for studies in construction or building sciences, architecture, or engineering. Altogether, the 2023–2024 scholarships total $30,000. News/Advocacy
