Registered Exterior Wall Consultant – REWC®

Those who desire to become Registered Exterior Wall Consultants must substantiate, to IIBEC, fulfillment of certain requirements. These requirements include verifiable levels of work experience and education, high ethical standards and a satisfactory score on both the REWC and General Consultant Knowledge (GCK) Exams.  Those who hold other IIBEC consultant designations are exempt from taking the GCK exam.  There is no separate application for the GCK Exam, as approval of the REWC application will qualify the candidates to take the general exam.

REWC Application Requirements

Verification of an applicant’s work experience is done using a point system. A minimum of 100 points is required from a minimum of three of 12 categories which identify the responsibilities of an exterior wall consultant.

The applicant must have at least six years of exterior wall consulting experience. The applicant must also earn a minimum of 150 hours of continuing education hours from a minimum of three technical programs within the roofing, waterproofing or exterior wall industries. Credit will be given toward this requirement for advanced degrees and professional licensing.

General Consultant Knowledge Exam

This exam tests knowledge common to all components of the building envelope (roofing, waterproofing and exterior walls).  This was designed to produce a more efficient testing process, eliminating common information being tested for each consultant designation.  To earn the REWC designation, a candidate must pass the general exam as well as the REWC technical exam.  However, applicants who currently hold the Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) and/or Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC) designation(s) are exempt from taking the GCK exam.

If only one of the two exams is passed (the general or the technical), the candidate will be required to retake only the exam he or she failed.  The exam that has been passed will be valid until the candidate passes the other exam and the first consultant designation is earned.  Candidates who do not pass an exam will have the option to retry every four months with a valid application.

The exam is computer-based and offered at over 1,000 conveniently located testing locations. Visit Meazure Learning for testing center locations.  The exam is up to 4 hours long and consists of 90 multiple-choice questions which test knowledge in the following general consulting areas:  ethics, general skills, communications and reports, codes and standards, design processes, procurement processes, agreements, and construction administration.
